The framerate can be outright atrocious, especially in the largest areas. For an attempt at a 3D platformer on the Saturn, and really, one of the first attempts, it does fairly well. I didn't play the PS1 version until many years later. It was the only 32bit console I had at the time. For me, my introductory to it was with the Sega Saturn version. Personally for me, I really do think that Tomb Raider is one of the best games of 1996.

Tomb Raider came out mere months after Mario 64. Also the game was just a generally good blueprint on how to make a 3D platformer. Mario 64 did introduce the concept of an analog thumb stick, which is pretty damn innovative on its own. generally speaking, Quake 1 contributed a lot to PC gaming. Valve's GoldSRC engine that powered Half-Life 1, Counter Strike, Team Fortress Classic, and their other games is based on the Quake 1 engine. Innovated net gaming (not just modem gaming) through the QuakeSpy client. Quake was also the first 3D game to use lightmaps.
